Embrace Nature through Nautical Decor
70
Nautical themed homes are often found near beaches or other large bodies of water. They are also one of the most popular home styles given the fact that items with nautical-themed decor are often associated with nature or eco-friendliness and are also on the good side of feng shui. Nautical decor items can be found for almost every room in the house, meaning that you can truly embrace nature through nautical decor.
Nautical Decor in the Living Room
Blue represents water, helping to promote a feeling of security and relaxation. Blue is also one of the primary colors in a nautical-themed living room. It can be brought in by striped living room furniture, like the sofa or chairs, through wall hangings, or even as one of the primary colors on a living room rug. A blue bowl filled with pretty seashells can also bring in both the color blue and a natural element of the ocean. The relaxing sounds of a fish aquarium are a good addition to a nautical-themed living room.
…in a Child's Room
A child's room is an easy place to bring in a nautical theme; for instance, the walls can be covered with sailboat-inspired wallpaper on the upper half with blue paint on the lower portion and either a sailboat border or a chair railing. It can also be painted yellow with white and blue accents. Accent pieces like a hanging rope ladder to store stuffed animals, a treasure chest toy chest, or even a boat's helm mounted for playtime add fun touches. The bed itself can be made using a simple row boat with mattress fitted inside to make any child's seafaring dreams come true. Hang fish or turtle wall sculptures for colorful and whimsical finishing touch.
…in a Bathroom
The bathroom is another simple room in the house in which to use a nautical theme. A good way to start creating a nautical theme in the bathroom is to paint the walls a pure blue and install white trim around the edges. Wall border with lighthouses on it is a good way to finish out the walls in your nautical bathroom. Nautical bathroom accessories can be found using either boats or lighthouses to finish off the look, or you can be more subtle with island-themed decor. If you want to go further, install an old fashioned, white claw-foot tub with a basic cloth curtain that features a nautical theme.
…in the Kitchen
One way to bring a nautical theme into the kitchen is to design the kitchen like that of a ship's galley. The interior of an old ship would have been solid brown, so utilizing wooden items in the kitchen is a good way to start. Wood is a great way to be creative, and a subtle approach can be achieved by the color brown, which gives off a soothing, comfortable energy for the room. Using wooden cabinets and bar stools along with a wooden or laminate flooring is a good start for any nautical themed kitchen. The color blue can bring in the “water” element of the nautical theme; then just take down your coffee metal decor and complete the look with wall hangings of ships, oceans, or harbors.
