Dozens of tips exist for making a room look larger, with many focused on furniture size and use of lighter colors as the way to make a small room look like it is much bigger. However, in some cases, the room is very large and spacious, and you want to bring it down some in scale to feel more cozy and family-oriented. Large-scale furniture brings a family room down to size effectively, and it can be the perfect way to make a large space look more homey and comfortable.

Oversized Couches and Chairs

This is one case where bigger is better, and larger, overstuffed and oversized pieces are a wonderful choice to bring down the scale of a large room. Use diverse fabrics and color choices to coordinate the space and keep things looking modern and contemporary. Oversized couches and chairs are often very comfortable, and some can even double as additional sleeping arrangements for overnight guests.

Many furniture retailers offer a wide variety of sizes and shapes when it comes to furniture choices. You should be able to find everything from dainty, petite pieces to coordinate with a small room or large, oversized couches or loveseats for the larger spaces. You are usually able to find many different color, pattern, and shape options as well, from modern cools to classic neutrals.

Other Big Items

The family room is often the home of other bulky items too, and these present more chances to bring the family room space down to size. Some examples of these include entertainment centers, bookcases, rugs, coffee tables, end tables, standing lamps, and mirrors. You can easily find them in a variety of sizes, and this is also a good chance to mix and match patterns and shades in the family room space.

Big focal points take away from the room’s size and help you focus visitors’ energy and attention to one particular part of the family room. This makes the room feel cozy and comfortable, so be sure that the size of the focal point is in keeping with the size of the room and the furniture. Make a grand statement with an oversized outdoor metal wall hanging for a wall decor art that works in perfect scale with a large room. Remember, small room, small furniture, small focal point, is the norm in a smaller room; so the reverse is true for a large family room space.

Color Rules

Keep in mind that there are a few loud shades that do or do not work well in this type of space. Red is great as an accent color, but it presents too much energy in a space where you want to relax, so avoid it on more than one wall. Cool blues, gray, white, off white, black, and similar colors are perfect for the modern room, but stick to neutrals if you want something more classic. Vintage shades are often vibrant and colorful, while more traditional shades of the same colors are a great choice if you just want to keep it simple. The prints should stay on the rug or throw pillows, especially if they are very bright or loud, or it could create a grossly overwhelming look.
